about

I wrote this song after finding myself mesmerized by a program on TV that was simply showing dash cam footage of someone driving through the Canadian province of Quebec. It made me think of all the long drives I have taken on Canadian highways, and the hypnosis that occurs after several hundred kilometres of trees and rocks broken by the occasional white cross on the side of the road, or declaration of love spray painted on an overpass.

To capture those meditative qualities the song structure is very repetitive, with interest being added by ever growing layers of new sounds and harmonies.

lyrics

green leaves
fallen trees
burnt bark
charcol stump
new growth
poking through
the brush along the highway

tires spin
engine hum
tires crunch
wipers swish
more cars
rushing by
vibrations on the highway

Billboards
save your soul
folk-art
stop to look
U-pick
attractions odd
For sale along the highway

Rock face
blasted clean
white shrine
Memories
Young love
Cry for help
Spray painted on the highway

sharp turn
up ahead
slow down
watch for moose
Don't pass
last chance for fuel
Along this barren highway
