about

I was sharing a one bedroom apartment with my husband on the fourth floor of a building in Montreal when the pandemic hit us. It was summer, so it was hot and stuffy, and I couldn't go to my studio because everything was shut down due to covid. Sarah Spencer, a songwriter in Nashville started a little online weekly writing session as something for songwriters to do during the pandemic. She gave two prompts on that first day. One was a list of 10 words from which you try to work 5 into a song, the other was to write a letter to your inner child. I chose the list of words, but in retrospect, I used them to write a letter to my inner child. I was sitting on my bed with my guitar and there was a bit of a breeze blowing in through the window, cutting through the stuffiness. The grass is always greener I suppose, so I started imagining living in a more rural setting. Remembering Newfoundland with its cool winds and damp old houses, and that feeling of renewal that comes with the spring after a long hard winter.

I credit this song very much with our decision to leave Montreal, my home of 13 years, and the city I thought I would spend the rest of my life in and return to rural Newfoundland. I wrote this on a nylon string classical guitar whose sound must have carried a lot more easily than I realized. Maybe it was the 7/8 riff that I was playing ad nauseam as I wrote the lyrics that were so unsettling, but our neighbours were very unhappy with me. One in particular, who was no doubt also unhappy about being confined to her stuffy one bedroom Montreal apartment got very angry. With it becoming increasingly apparent that Covid restrictions were going to affect my ability to make music, me and my husband determined that the only way for me to continue to bloom and grow was by returning to Newfoundland.

lyrics

Bloom and Grow

Running through the undergrowth
Popping up to get a peek
If the coast is clear enough to
Get away

Get away from all your thoughts
Get out from your winter wrap
Let the butterflies come out and
Flutter round

Bloom and grow child
Bloom and grow
Reach for the mountains don't brace for the fall

Time enough for caution
When the day is done

Window opened up for spring
Mouldy where the damp got in
Where the paint has chipped away
Clean it off

Let the fresh air enter in
Let it rush through all your things
Gather up the dust and make it
Blow away

Bloom and grow child
Bloom and grow
Reach for the mountains don't brace for the fall
Time enough for caution when the day is done

When you hit the ground
Chances are you'll bounce

Then you'll be stronger
And you'll be wiser too
You'll still be foolish
But you won't mind so much

Summer's rays are creeping in
Search light in the living room
Pouring light on all the things you
Hide away
Memories folded in a drawer
Thoughts we bundled up and stored
Locked away, forgot, till they came
Back around

Bloom and grow child
Bloom and grow
Embrace the moment don't dwell on the fall
Leave the reflection till the day is done

Bloom and grow child
Bloom and grow
Reach for the mountains don't brace for the fall
Time enough for caution when the day is done

When you hit the ground
Chances are you'll bounce

Bloom and grow
Bloom and grow
