John Prine is one of my biggest song writing heros. In my early 20s I lived with Cara Winsor Hehir and we played in a heavy metal band together, but we also spent a lot of time sitting in our kitchen singing John Prine songs. We've seen him perform together and his music has gotten us both through some tough times. We were heartbroken when we heard he was in the hospital with covid-19. Cara woke up in the middle of the night and wrote these words out in one fell swoop. She sent them to me with her usual caveat that I could alter them any way I saw fit. I didn't change a thing. The raspberry patch is a memory from her childhood, and running amok on Angel Place is a memory from mine.
