about

This came out of a song prompt that was a list of 10 words, with the idea that you choose at least 5 and write a song. The words were very beachy. Things like coast, spray, sand, warm. I wrote this in July of 2020 during the pandemic. I had visited 3 separate beaches in the last year and thought about all the times I'd waded in and then been knocked down by a surprise wave. I wrote the lyrics first, sort of as a poem, then added melody, and finally figuered out the chord progression. Different from my usual way of working, but I'm quite pleased with the result.

lyrics

Warm sun, bare skin, braced for cold
Shocking pleasure of immersion
Plant my toes, grip the sand
Extend my arms, caress the surface
And wait

Gentle, gentle, are the waves

The big spray hits when I'm not looking
Takes advantage of my lapse
Scoops my body up and slams my
Insignificant form down

Down to drag along the bottom
Dislodging snails and habitations
Hair like netting catches seaweed
Tangles round my face and throat

Choking salt spitting liquid
I'm ejected, used, exhausted

Bobbing like the wooden treasures
Shaped, softened and displaced by
The ocean.
